If you are doing machine embroidery on anything sheer, poly mesh makes a great stabilizer for the underside because it is lightweight, has some drape and is good for clothing because it is not abrasive on the skin.In a technical definition, a gimbal is a pivoted support that is allowing any object to rotate on a single axis.
To help hold the stabilizer in place, you can spray KK2000 onto the fabric top and bottom before sandwiching the layers, or you can use S-D-Solv, which has all of the properties of D-Solv and is sticky on one side. It's also good for the top of the fabric because it's easy to see through as you are doing your design. For this reason my favorite fabric stabilizer is one called D-Solv, and running the item through a cold water rinse cycle with no detergent will dissolve it.ĭ-Solv's non-textured, smooth surface is thicker and heavier than the other stabilizers, good for underneath the fabric. The biggest hassle about stabilizers is getting them off the fabric after the design is completed. Stabilizers are key to keep the embroidery from distorting. Both silk thread and metallic thread are washable in cold water only and must be line-dried or on a low-heat dryer. Metallic thread can give dramatic effects but can make the area scratchy. Silk thread is very fine and therefore does not provide the best coverage. What is good about cotton is that it can take a high-heat iron, important if you are making napkins or tablecloths in linen that will require a high heat for a crisp press. Polyester thread can be machine laundered or dry cleaned, is colorfast and has a slight amount of stretch, making it the most suitable if your fabric is a knit but a good choice on anything you plan to launder a lot.Ĭotton thread washes well but will fade with time. Polyester, while not as shiny as rayon, does have some sheen to it, while cotton has a flat, matte finish. For washable items, polyester or cotton threads are your best choice. Rayon thread is hand-washable and must be pressed with a synthetic-temperature iron and would be a great choice for a decorator pillow but not for something that needs to be machine-laundered, such as napkins or towels. In my opinion, rayon thread makes the most beautiful embroidery because of its sheen.įor most embroidery machines, a 30- to 35-weight thread gives better coverage, but not all machines can handle the thicker thread, so use a 40-weight thread.
Serger thread, while lightweight, is not recommended for the bobbin. If the underside of the embroidery will be seen, you can also use DMC heirloom weight cotton 60 weight in the bobbin, which comes in many colors. Robison-Anton puts out lightweight bobbin thread in prewrapped cardboard bobbins in black and white. Finishing Touch makes lighter-weight thread for the bobbin in black and white. It is important to use a lighter weight thread on the bobbin, or you will get thread build-up under your design. If you are working on a large design, you may need to change the needle between colors. If the needle makes a popping or snapping sound, the point has dulled.
